SIDNEY POITIER, RICHARD LINKLATER & PASOLINI & THE WEEKEND PICKS (APRIL 1 - 3)

It’s a delightfully eclectic mixed bag of genres and visions amongst our round up of picks for classics on the big screen this weekend. From cinema legends, 35mm prints and one of the most controversial films ever made, you won’t be spoiled for choice.

From Fri 4/1st: The first major Black male movie star of his generation and the first to win an Oscar for Best Actor, Sidney Poitier (1927-2022) had a career spanning six decades and is subject of SIDNEY POITIER & HIS TRAILBLAZING CONTEMPORARIES a retrospective of his work at The Film Forum, NYC kicking off today with NO WAY OUT, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT among other powerhouse films. A young girl whose father is an ex-convict and whose mother is a junkie finds it difficult to conform and tries to find comfort in a quirky combination of Elvis and the punk scene in OUT OF THE BLUE (1980 / 35mm Print), Directed by Dennis Hopper, screening at The Prince Charles Cinema, London. Fri 4/1st & Sat 4/2nd Midnight: Bat fans often put this extremely underrated animated big screen adventure, that came and went initially in cinemas, amongst the best movie versions of the Dark Knight, set in the award winning world of the iconic animated series, and voiced by the man who’s become the voice in most people’s heads when they think of the character; Kevin Conroy. Fri 4/1st 8pm: Journey back in time for a SILENT COMEDIES special at The Redford Theatre, Detroit. Includes Felix Saves the Day (1922) Buster Keaton in The Goat (1921) and Harold Lloyd in Safety Last (1923) with Pipe Organ accompaniment. More info HERE.

Fri 4/2nd - Sun 4/4th 7:30pm: About as testosterone fueled a film as you can get, under the Directorial talent of the brilliant Kathryn Bigelow, POINT BREAK (1991) sees Keanu Reeves dialing it up to 11 as Maverick FBI agent, Johnny Utah, sent undercover to infiltrate a group of surfers who are suspected of being a notorious gang of bank robbers. Fri 4/1st 6:30pm: One of the most renowned and devastating of film noirs—and a caustic black comedy about the Hollywood system SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950) begins with a corpse floating in a swimming pool and ends with an indelible moment for star Gloria Swanson. Fri 4/1st 11:45pm: In one of the most majestically off-kilter mainstream comedies in the history of cinema, Martin Short, pushing 40, plays a 10-year-old, narrating his delinquent youth via a bizarre, future-set framing device. Fri 4/1st 7:30pm: John Carpenter's first feature was this outrageously unique sci-fi semi-spoof of 2001, that began as a 45-minute student film before becoming a feature length. DARK STAR (1974 / New Restoration) at The Grand Illusion Theatre, Seattle. More info HERE.

Sat 4/2nd 6:35pm & Sun 4/3rd 12:30pm: The beloved 80s classic BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE (1988) has been gloriously restored! This treasured time-travelling comedy stars Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as the hopeless but lovable duo who’ve become cult icons after gracing screens for the first time more than 30 years ago. Sat 4/2nd 8pm:

Sat 4/2nd 11:30pm: A total 90s MTV era classic, Whitney Houston is superstar performer who falls for her security detail played by Kevin Costner. and features that mega ballad that sat at number one for most of ’92. Sat 4/2nd 8pm: The notorious final film from Pier Paolo Pasolini, SALO: OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM (1975) has been called nauseating, shocking, depraved, pornographic . . . but it’s also a masterpiece. Screening in 4K at The Astor Theatre, Melbourne as part of the Astor's ongoing Pasolini Festival. More info HERE.

Sat 4/2nd 1:30pm: The catty Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) makes a bet that her step-brother, Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe), won’t be able to bed Annette (Reese Witherspoon) – a virgin, who wants to wait until she is in love. Sat 4/2nd 8pm: In this classic film noir, insurance salesman (Fred MacMurray) gets roped into a murderous scheme when he falls for the sensual Barbara Stanwyck, who is intent on killing her husband. DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944) screens at The Michigan Theatre, Ann Arbor. More info HERE.

Sat 4/2nd 1pm & Sun 4/3rd 12:30pm: Winner of ten Oscars including Best Picture, the original WEST SIDE STORY (1961) and has stood the test of time as one of the greatest film musicals, featuring unforgettable songs by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and choreography by Jerome Robbins. Sat 4/2nd 9pm & Sun 4/3rd 8pm: Originally shot in 1984, NEW YORK NINJA was abandoned before the reels turned up decades later. Vinegar Syndrome completed a restoration, however, with no audio or script, the final result features new music and voice acting, culminating in a true labor of love and a unique experience! Sat 4/2nd 6:30pm: Movies don’t come more influential than the tale of Dorothy in the fantastical far away land of Oz, complete with one of the all time greatest scene transitions as she steps from sepia tinged black and white into full Technicolor. Sun 4/3rd 4pm: It made our round up last week, and we’re adding it again because it’s such wonderfully retro kitsch. Catch the Mexican cinema B classic that, truly, has no link to the DC Comics outside of the skimpy remix of Batgirl's costume! BATWOMAN (1968) screens at The Roxie Theatre, San Francisco.
