UPDATED: WHERE TO SEE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY 70MM ROADSHOW OF 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

Headed by Christopher Nolan, the monumental masterpiece of Stanley Kubrick heads back to cinemas in a completely photochemical restoration to present it exactly the way it was intended to be seen.

There is truly, absolutley no other way to experience this towering milestone in cinema history. Captured in Super 65mm for a 70mm Print release, this is the way Stanley Kubrick intended 2001: A Space Odyssey to be seen. Now for it's 50th Anniversary, Warner Brothers Pictures is releasing a new completely photochemical re-issue “unrestored” 70mm print (no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits) of the director’s groundbreaking science fiction epic, the prints were struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative.

R3TM354HEZBX5GD5EUY777F6BA.jpg

Headed by Christopher Nolan, who has spearheaded the industry's move back to shooting on film and he himself an adamant user of 70mm, the new print is restored using traditional techniques, and given it is completely photochemical, it allows the odd scratch or dust particles to get through, making an authentic experience. In 1999, as part of a preservation project, Warner Bros Vice President Ned Price team had his team make an “interpositive” of the film, a copy of the original camera negatives, a process that involved carefully cleaning the original negatives, removed old repairs and created new interpositives.

The result of the new 70mm prints being struck means we get true tones that were captured on the negative, and faithful reproduction of the sound elements. Many digital restorations are handled by color graders looking to simply improve overall color range or balance skin tones that will throw entire background hues out of whack. Some of the recent digital restorations of Kubrick's work have resulted in atrocious color casts ('Spartacus' in particular looks almost a sickening shade of red), and even non Kubrick films like the classic Star Wars Trilogy for the recent Blu Ray transfer were hampered by atrocious color work, sending the image to the magenta end of the color range. No such problems this time round, thanks to Mr. Nolan who may be the biggest fan of all of this monumental and consistently inspiring achievement in movie making

NEW 70MM SCREENINGS AT THE PRINCE CHARLES

Last Action Hero, Willow and more come out of the woodwork in 70mm at this UK film institution!

With Christopher Nolan's new film Dunkirk gearing up for a 70mm release, The Prince Charles Cinema in London are offering a chance to experience some earlier films given the grand 70mm treatment. Unlike 2001 which was captured in Super 65mm for the 70mm format, the below films are 35mm to 70mm 'blow ups', which meant a special 70mm print was struck to cater for the premium large film format. Some of these are quite rare to see in the larger format.

A royal decree awards Arrakis to Duke Leto Atreides and ousts his bitter enemies, the Harkonnens. However, when the Harkonnens violently seize back their fiefdom, it is up to Paul (Kyle MacLachlan), Leto's son, to lead the Fremen, the natives of Arrakis, in a battle for control of the planet and its spice. Based on Frank Herbert's epic novel.

1982-CENTRIC 70MM COLLECTION AT THE EGYPTIAN, L.A.

Head back to 1982 with a collection of films that made the jump from 35mm to 70mm blow-ups.

After it was discovered that films originally shot in 35mm could be blown up to 70mm to take advantage of the latter format’s superior sound and brighter imagery, numerous blockbusters were converted to the widescreen format, a process that peaked in the 1980s. Join The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood for the continuation of their two weekend collection of fantasy, horror and sci-fi as they turn the clock back 35 years with some of the most memorable movies of 1982. Although some of the prints have been noted to have faded in color, this in itself adds to the sense of experiencing a true celluloid artifact and the fragility of the medium.

Wed Jun 21st 7:30pm
THE THING

Director John Carpenter took the 1951 sci-fi classic THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, produced by Howard Hawks, and turned it into something darker, fiercer and altogether more disturbing, pitting sombrero-wearing helicopter pilot Kurt Russell and a crew of Arctic scientists (Wilford Brimley, Donald Moffat, Richard Dysart) against a ravenous, shape-shifting alien being. From the haunting opening shots of a sled dog fleeing across the snow, to the apocalyptic, fire-and-ice ending, this ranks with Ridley Scott’s ALIEN as one of the finest (and most beautifully crafted) sci-fi films of the past 30 years. The film was terribly underrated by critics on its initial release, but its stock has constantly risen in the ensuing decades as one of the most intelligent, scary and uncompromising horror films of the 1980s. Also starring Keith David and David Clennon. Please note that color has partially faded on this print, the only known 70mm copy.

Thu Jun 22nd 7:30pm
MAD MAX 2: THE ROAD WARRIOR

Hockey mask-wearing Lord Humungus whips his speed freaks into a frenzy, while Road Warrior Mel Gibson tries to save the remnants of civilization in director George Miller’s lean, mean, thrill machine. Please note that color has faded on this print.

Fri Jun 23rd 7:30pm
E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL (1982)

Arguably director Steven Spielberg’s most popular film, it follows several children (including Henry Thomas and a very young Drew Barrymore) who shelter and try to help a stranded alien back home to the stars. Magical and enchanting. With Dee Wallace Stone and Peter Coyote.

Fri Jun 23rd 10:00pm
THE DARK CRYSTAL

Introduction by filmmaker Bernard Rose (whose first job in the movies was as a PA on THE DARK CRYSTAL).Legendary Muppets creator Jim Henson was inspired by a Lewis Carroll poem to create his own fairy tale about Jen, the last surviving Gelfling, who is sent by his dying master on an epic quest to fulfill his destiny to heal the fractured Dark Crystal. After three years of brainstorming with a team that included renowned fantasy artist Brian Froud and screenwriter David Odell, Henson wove the ideas into a story that was fleshed out by Odell, and the task shifted to bringing those words and images to life in this charming film which used then-state-of-the-art technology to create a groundbreaking alchemy of puppetry and electronics on a scale never before attempted.

Sat Jun 24th 7:30pm
TRON

Hacker Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is digitally abducted into the inner realm of the ENCOM computer, where he must compete in virtual gladiatorial games in order to survive. During a Light Cycle match, Flynn teams up with the brave security program Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) and together the two battle the system to try to free the Digital World. With Cindy Morgan.

SCI-FI IN 70MM AT OREGON'S HOLLYWOOD THEATRE

Sci Fi greats come to Portland in 70mm Print Format this April.

This April, the Hollywood Theatre in Oregon will present a 70mm Sci-fi Weekend, featuring three spectacular Sci Fi favorites with the 1984 classic GHOSTBUSTERS, the 1982 Disney production TRON, and Christopher Nolan's acclaimed 2014 film INTERSTELLAR.

With a greater aspect ratio and higher resolution than 35mm film, 70mm imagery is sharper, richer, and more immersive. There is no projectable digital format that exceeds the clarity of 70mm, and even then, formats like 4K retain an almost 'too sharp' image and often lifeless, flat digital color palette. The Hollywood Theatre is the only venue in the state of Oregon capable of screening films in 70mm! Tickets to the April 70mm Sci-Fi Weekend are on sale now. Hollywood Theatre members received pre-sale access to these screenings.

Without further ado, here's a recap of the lineup;

TRON (1982) - A computer hacker is abducted into the digital world and forced to participate in gladiatorial games, where his only chance of escape is with the help of a heroic security program. Starring Jeff Bridges, David Warner and Cindy Morgan, and featuring groundbreaking special effects. Fri 4/7, 7:00pm & Sat 4/8, 9:00pm

INTERSTELLAR (2014) - A team of explorers travels through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity's survival. Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. Directed by Christopher Nolan. Sat 4/8, 1:00pm & Sun 4/9, 6:00pm

GHOSTBUSTERS (1984) - A group of former parapsychology professors set up shop as a ghost removal service. When an ancient god is resurrected to bring an end to humanity, who you gonna call??? Starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis. Directed by Ivan Reitman. Fri 4/7, 9:30 pm & Sat 4/8, 6:00pm

GASLIGHTING AND TORMENTING: FROM HITCH TO THE LOVE WITCH
Aero Theatre, Santa Monica

In the 1944 classic GASLIGHT, duplicitous Charles Boyer torments wife Ingrid Bergman, hoping to drive her into an insane asylum. The film brought Bergman her first Oscar and inspired the term “gaslighting” to describe cruel, deceptive mind games played by one spouse upon the other (with rare exceptions - such as LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN - it’s generally the husband responsible for the dirty deeds). Anna Biller's THE LOVE WITCH is the most recent episode of cinematic gaslighting, but Alfred Hitchcock lent to the genre - so we've included his work in the series too with DIAL M FOR MURDER (in digital 3D) and SHADOW OF A DOUBT  in honor of Hitchcock Appreciation Day. "Feud" 'it girl,' Joan Crawford in SUDDEN FEAR is not to be missed, and we couldn't leave out DIABOLIQUE and ROSEMARY'S BABY!
