Join The Coolidge for two of the most thrilling man-eating plant movies of the 1960s on 35mm! A group of tourists arrive to see the botanical gardens on a small island off the Italian coast. The only inhabitants of the island are the famous botanist Baron von Weser (Cameron Mitchell) and his two faithful servants; all of the other residents fled after a series of mysterious deaths. The baron is engaged in odd scientific research involving a menagerie of carnivorous plants, but takes great care of one particular specimen / Dr. Terror (Peter Cushing) is a mysterious fortune teller who boards a train and offers to tell five fellow passengers their fortune with tarot cards. Five possible futures unfold: an architect returns to his ancestral home to find a werewolf out for revenge; a huge flesh-eating vine takes over a house; a musician gets involved with voodoo; an art critic is pursued by a disembodied hand and a doctor discovers his new wife is a vampire. But they all end in the same result.....DEATH.

Elated by the success of the “Comeback Special” 1968 television spectacular, Elvis returned to live performance, and thence to the documentary, the form of rock ‘n’ roll cinema that had replaced the Hollywood features in which he had been trapped. Though studio financed, ELVIS: THAT’S THE WAY IT IS follows the conventions of the independent rock documentaries that culminated in WOODSTOCK. But the social interactions differ from both the Hollywood features and the countercultural documentaries. Elvis is the object of his fans’ burning love and utter adoration. He may lean down and kiss them and even go amongst them, but he is not of them. Having transcended the rebel of the Fifties’ features and the regular guy of the Sixties’, having even transcended regular kingship, Elvis elevates rock ‘n’ roll into a religious rite – but one that ironically also asserts its triumphant integration in the apparatuses of the corporate culture industries.

His hallucinations, which include a carnival populated by dwarfs, bizarrely erotic encounters and even his own death, radically reshape his consciousness.

When Dr. Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) and other astronauts are sent on a mysterious mission, their ship's computer system, HAL, begins to display increasingly strange behavior, leading up to a tense showdown between man and machine that results in a mind-bending trek through space and time.

George A. Romero Tribute

Initially described by George Romero as a "feminist film," SEASON OF THE WITCH underwent major cuts before release and ended up being marketed as a softcore porn film entitled HUNGRY WIVES. Following the success of DAWN OF THE DEAD in 1978, the film was again re-cut and re-released as SEASON OF THE WITCH, becoming known as a skillful exploration of the occult. The plot revolves around Joan Mitchell (Jan White), a suburban housewife who goes through an identity crisis after her daughter leaves for college and her husband (Bill Thunhurs) grows violent and alienated. Finding solace in witchcraft, Joan's exploration of supernatural powers leads to a series of sexual encounters and a murder. Part of The AFI's tribute to Director George A. Romero.

Championed by critics and audiences alike, the movie was hailed as a refreshing female take on the coming-of-age story.

Veronica is part of the most popular clique at her high school, but she disapproves of the other girls’ cruel behaviour. When Veronica and her new boyfriend, J.D. confront clique leader Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) and accidentally poison her, they make it appear a suicide. Soon Veronica realizes that J.D. is intentionally killing students he does not like. She races to stop J.D. while also clashing with the clique’s new leader, Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty).

Arnie and Sly go back to back! Arnold Schwarzenegger appears as a pumped-up Shakespearian hero while an announcer bellows, “Something is rotten in Denmark — and Hamlet is taking out the trash!” This gag sets the stage for the post-modernist action epic The Last Action Hero. The film concerns Danny Madigan (Austin O’Brien), a lonely eleven-year-old boy who escapes from his bleak New York City reality by glorying in the action adventure movies of his favorite film character, Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Danny’s friend is an elderly movie projectionist, Nick (Robert Prosky), who lets Danny into the shabby Times Square movie theater where he works so Danny can see Slater’s new movie. He hands Danny a magic ticket given to him years ago by Houdini, and when Nick rips the ticket and gives Danny the stub, Danny finds himself catapulted from the theater into the back seat of Slater’s speeding sports car in “Jack Slater IV.” Danny becomes Slater’s helper as Jack battles a trio of nefarious bad guys –Benedict (Charles Dance), Vivaldi (Anthony Quinn) and The Ripper (Tom Noonan). But things get out of hand when Benedict steals Danny’s magic ticket stub and transports himself into Danny’s reality. Benedict and The Ripper proceed to wreak havoc along Broadway, forcing Slater to cross into reality to get the villains and, in the process, learn about blood and pain.

Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes go at it amid a dazzling cyber-future in this explosive hit. In 2032 archcriminal Simon Phoenix (Snipes) awakens from a 35-year deep freeze in CryoPrison to find a serene non-violent Los Angeles ready for the taking. Unable to deal with Phoenix’s brutal 1990s style officials seek an old-fashioned cop to fight old-fashioned crime. They revive Sgt. John Spartan (Stallone) unjustly serving a CryoPrison sentence because of his last encounter with Phoenix. Sandra Bullock Benjamin Bratt and Denis Leary also play rough and tough in this “terrific mix of action and humour”.

In Berlin in 1931, American cabaret singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) meets British academic Brian Roberts (Michael York), who is finishing his university studies. Despite Brian's confusion over his sexuality, the pair become lovers, but the arrival of the wealthy and decadent playboy Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem) complicates matters for them both. This love triangle plays out against the rise of the Nazi party and the collapse of the Weimar Republic.

Movies about kids befriending undomesticated animals were big business in the early 90s, and arguably the biggest of them all was 1993’s box office hit Free Willy. Directed by Simon Wincer, Free Willy tells the story of a troubled 12 year-old Seattle boy (Jason James Richter) who befriends a captured orca – aka killer whale – who has become the reluctant attraction of a local theme park; this, naturally, leads to the organization of a mission to break the whale out of captivity, aided by Willy’s trainer (Lori Petty), handler (August Schellenberg) and the boy’s foster parents (Jayne Atkinson and Michael Madsen). A highly enjoyable kids’ film bolstered by a great cast and pop soundtrack that includes the memorable Michael Jackson penned theme, Free Willy went on to spawn several sequels as well as many amusing cultural references. With Michael Ironside, Danielle Harris, Mykelti Williamson and Keiko the whale as Willy.

REQUIESCANT (1967 / DCP)

Directed by Carlo Lizzani (Wake Up and Kill) and featuring a superbly haunting soundtrack by Riz Ortolani (Day of Anger), Requiescant – Latin for “Rest in Peace” – ranks among the finest, most overtly allegorical of the non-Zapata Spaghetti Westerns. Lou Castel (A Bullet for the General) plays a young man raised to be a pacifist by a travelling preacher after Confederates massacre his family. But when his stepsister runs away, the pursuit reveals a natural talent as a sharp-shooter as well as a bloody and an unexpected confrontation with his past. Joining Castel in the film are an impressive array of performers including Mark Damon (Black Sabbath) as the sadistic aristocratic villain, Franco Citti (The Godfather) as his wicked henchman, and legendary Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini (Teorema) in a rare acting role as a revolutionary priest. This thrilling, thought-provoking political Western was named by director Alex Cox as “the one film to prove that the Italian Western was not solely Sergio Leone’s.”

Orson Welles' classic in which Michael O'Hara, against his better judgement, hires on as a crew member of Arthur Bannister's yacht, sailing to San Francisco. They pick up Grisby, Bannister's law partner, en route. Bannister has a wife, Rosalie, who seems to like Michael much better than she likes her husband. After they dock in Sausalito, Michael goes along with Grisby's weird plan to fake his (Grisby's) murder so he can disappear untailed. He wants the $5000 Grisby has offered, so he can run off with Rosalie. But Grisby turns up actually murdered, and Michael gets blamed for it. Somebody set him up, but it is not clear who or how. Bannister (the actual murderer?) defends Michael in court.

The immortal Rita Hayworth stars in this legendary classic, Gilda. Just arrived in Argentina, small-time crooked gambler Johnny Farrell is saved from a gunman by sinister Ballin Mundson, who later makes Johnny his right-hand man. But their friendship based on mutual lack of scruples is strained when Mundson returns from a trip with a wife: the supremely desirable Gilda, whom Johnny once knew and learned to hate. The relationship of Johnny and Gilda, a battlefield of warring emotions, becomes even more bizarre after Mundson disappears...
